On Thursday, August 16, just after 5:31 p.m., a resident reported to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office that her home had been burglarized while she was away. Deputies responded to the scene and discovered the home had been burglarized and items of clothing and a .22 caliber rifle were taken by an unknown suspect. It was also discovered the burglar consumed food in the home and had turned on the television set. Also found in the home was a note written by the possible burglary suspect, indicating he may harm himself.
Prior to arriving at the home, one of the Deputies observed a male adult walking on the side of the Road about 200 yards from the residence. The pedestrian was wearing an oversized pair of shorts and a sweatshirt and was wearing socks and no shoes. The investigation revealed the suspect took clothing from the home, possibly matching what the pedestrian was previously been observed wearing. The missing rifle and a pair of shoes not belonging to the resident were found in another room of the residence by the deputies.
Deputy Ruddell left the residence and located the pedestrian he previously observed walking in the vicinity. The pedestrian was identified as the suspect in the burglary and theft of the residence and it was reasonably determined at least some of the garments he was wearing were stolen from the home.
The suspect, identified as Mr. Steven Workman, 27, of Medford, Oregon, was arrested at the location for burglary of an occupied dwelling and possession of stolen property. The investigation revealed the suspect likely entered the home while it was still occupied by the resident in the morning, prior to the owner’s departure. The suspect was cooperative and admitted that he burglarized the home, ate some food, watched television, and took a shower. He also admitted taking clothing from the home. He claimed that he consumed some “laced weed” (marijuana) the night before burglarizing the home. The investigation further revealed the suspect had an extensive criminal record for a variety of crimes and he is currently a registered sex offender.
According to Sheriff Jon Lopey, “These deputies responded quickly and were alert and observant, which led to the recovery of the stolen items and the arrest of the burglary and theft suspect. He was booked at the Siskiyou County Jail in Yreka and will be arraigned within 48-hours. We are fortunate to have apprehended the suspect before he could cause more harm. Based on the note he left in the home, Mr. Workman will receive assistance from Siskiyou County Behavioral Health Services.”
