Klamathon Fire Adds 14,000 Acres Monday

The Klamathon blaze started Thursday afternoon when a resident living southwest of the Klamath River allegedly lit a small fire on a friend’s property, which then spread to a tree, jumped the river and spread into nearby hills.

On Monday fire officials observed “moderate” fire behavior as the fire grew 14,000 acres in the now 36,500 acre blaze with the same behavior anticipated over last night.

2,798 fire personnel, 18 helicopters, 208 engines, 27 water tenders, 88 hand crews and 29 dozers continue to attempt to get a handle on the blaze that has now destroyed 82 structures and continues to threaten hundreds of other structures in massive areas currently under evacuation orders.

The west and north flank continued to have short range spotting in the timber stands as strong ridge winds continue to surface in the afternoons. These conditions continue to threaten areas in Jackson County OR.

The southern flank should hold north of the Klamath River and in the town of Hornbrook. Completed lines on the east flank are expected to continue to minimize the threat to Iron Gate Reservoir Estates.

Flanks in timber and in upper elevations will continue to see fire activity in isolated areas to the west and northern flanks.
