On Thursday afternoon, July 5th, a wildfire broke out near Hornbrook, California. At last report the fire, originally reported by CalTrans, grew from 50 acres to 5,000+ between 3:00 pm and 8:15 pm and at last report is 0% contained.
The fire started about two miles southeast of Hornbrook at the very time a red flag warning was in effect for high winds, high temperatures, and low humidity.
Interstate 5 has been closed and Caltrans District 2 officials are advising the traveling public, both commercial and private, that Interstate 5 near the California – Oregon border would remain CLOSED throughout the night due to the Klamathon Fire.
The Oregon Department of Transportation, ODOT, announced the closing of Interstate Five to southbound traffic at Ashland, with northbound traffic being held at Yreka. The closure was in effect overnight, with no estimated time for reopening.
CalFire reported the Klamathon Fire at 5,000+ acres as of 8:15 PM, with no containment in sight. Multiple structures are reported damaged or destroyed, and many more are threatened and forcing the evacuation of Hornbrook and Hilt/Colestin Valley.
Evacuations are in progress for the town of Hornbrook, north of Copco Road. An Evacuation Order is in effect for Klamathon Rd from I-5 to ager and all Hornbrook City all the way to and including Hilt /Colestein Valley.
The American Red Cross has opened an emergency shelter in Ashland for people displaced by the Klamathon Fire burning in Northern California.
Those who are in need of assistance should report to Ashland High School, located at 201 S. Mountain Avenue, Ashland.

The shelter was requested by California Highway Patrol after some residents near Hilt, Calif. were forced to evacuate to the north. The closure of Interstate 5 at the Oregon-California border has prevented some evacuees from accessing a Red Cross shelter in Yreka, Calif.
