On Saturday, June 23rd, U.S. Coast Guard Sector North Bend received a call of 4 adult males in the water after their 19 ft boat capsized throwing them into the sea.
The F/V Big Wave picked up the first person, as another good Samaritan in a private vessel picked up a second person.
Two men were still in the water holding on to their stern of the 18-foot pleasure craft when the U.S. Coast Guard 47-foot Motor Life Boat 47235 arrived on scene and threw one man a heaving line and pulled him on board.
The Motor Life Boat launched a Surface Swimmer who swam over to get the person in the water, who was becoming hypothermic and losing his energy.
An aircrew from Sector North Bend arrived on scene to assist and lowered a rescue swimmer to assist getting the victim suffering from hypothermia in the stokes litter. However, the victim did not want to be hoisted by the Coast Guard helicopter and was assisted into the 47-foot Motor Life Boat.
The boat crew from U.S. Coast Guard Station Coos Bay brought the mariners back to the Charlston Bay boat dock and transferred the victims to EMS personnel waiting at the dock where they were then taken to Bay Area Hospital. No serious injuries were reported.
The owner of the boat stated that one of the mariners had been trapped in an air-pocket in the bow of the capsized vessel, but was able to swim out.
The F/V Restless towed the overturned vessel to the Coos Bay boat ramp. The station crew and captain pumped out and righted the boat. The vessel was then towed to the boat ramp by the U.S. Coast Guard 47-foot Motor Life Boat, raised the engine manually, and the Captain of the Restless put it on a trailer until the owner could get to it.
Incredible job by all the crews and the good the good Samaritans involved!
