Bruins take 2 of 3 from South Umpqua-Eye Play-Offs

Roman Worthey started on the bump for the Bruins.

On Friday afternoon the Brookings-Harbor boys varsity baseball team hosted a double-header against the 5-4 South Umpqua Lancers on a perfect day for baseball.

Starting pitcher Roman Worthey took the hill in the first game quickly dispatching the first three batters he faced going six innings and striking out two on his day.

The Bruins wasted no time in the first game getting two runners on the base paths for Big Jon Kleespies. Kleespies took the first pitch he saw and sent it on a one way trip out of the park, driving in three runs in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the seventh, with the game tied at 3 apiece, the Lancers broke through Bruins relief pitcher Cody Testa after an error put a runner on. With a Lancer runner on second base, the Lancer doubled to right field scoring the runner and taking a 4-3 lead.

Bruin freshman Payton Armentrout who had a stellar afternoon made sure the Bruins weren’t done when stepped up to the plate and hit a double to centerfield. After advancing to third on a Jacob Racho single, Cody Testa would get the RBI when Armentrout crossed the plate to tie the game at 4. Jacub McCullom picked up the winning RBI with a single scoring Jacob Racho giving the Bruins the 5-4 win.

In the second game of the afternoon, Cody Testa took the mound getting the Bruins out of the top of the first in quick order.

After Jacob Racho gets hit by a pitch and is advanced to 3rd by Testa and Kleespies, Roman Worthey stepped into the box hitting a single and getting the first RBI of the game when Jacob Racho crossed the plate.

But it wouldn’t be until the sixth inning that the Bruins pulled away for good with four runs in the inning off of with Testa, Jon Kleespies, and Worthey all moving runners across the plate with RBIs.

Bruin batters put together 12 hits in the game. Justin Vanginderen, Manny Zamora, Worthey, and Kleespies all had multiple hits for the Bruins. Vanginderen led the Bruin offense with three hits in four at-bats.

Freshman shortstop Payton Armentrout #1 proved himself to be a 4 tool threat for the Bruins with a spectacular performance Friday afternoon recording multiple hits, speed on the base paths, solid glovework at shortstop, and an accurate powerful arm.

When asked after the game what stood out to him on the day, Coach Keith Wallin said “the boys had an incredible week of practice and bought into a great game plan. I’m looking forward to a big week against Marshfield. We need to continue to work hard, respect the process and enjoy the work” he went on to say.
