The California Highway Patrol has reported that a semi truck collided head-on with a Nissan Maxima, spilling approximately 100 gallons of diesel fuel before exploding into flames at the north entrance to the Klamath River Bridge at Klamath.
The fire was extinguished quickly after fire units arrived on the scene, and officials were immediately dispatched to inspect damage to the bridge as well as if any fuel or oil was able to contaminate the Klamath River.
The driver of the semi reportedly managed to escape the truck’s cabin, but the person in the sedan had reportedly suffered major injuries and after extrication was flown to St. Josephs Hospital in Eureka where that person, unfortunately, succumbed to their injuries.
Clearing the accident and inspection of the integrity of the bridge caused long delays and heavy traffic before Hwy. 101 was open to one lane traffic at approximately 3:00 pm. It wasn’t until 8:00 pm that the California Highway Patrol reported that Hwy. 101 was re-opened.
