The 5-1 Brookings-Harbor Bruins boys varsity team enjoyed their first home game since last Tuesday taking on the 5-0 North Bend Bulldogs in a battle of 4A-3 Far West League leaders.
A confident Bruins team came into the game riding a 4 game win streak in which the Bruin offense racked up 49 points dominating both Douglas and Siuslaw.
Freshman pitcher #13 Adam Shew took the hill for the Bruins getting a pop-out and a walk before a Bulldog line drive to centerfield would score the first run of the game. A groundout and an error allowed the Bulldogs to add another run before the Bruins could get out of the top of the first inning.
North Bend junior Mane Freeman #12 was on the mound for the Bulldogs and retired the first two Bruin batters he faced, walked Bruin Roman Worthey #11 and struck out junior Jon Kleespies #28 shutting down the Bruins in their half of the first inning.
After allowing the first Bulldog batter on with a line drive to left field, Bruin pitcher Adam Shew dispatched the next three Bulldog batters he faced sending the Bruins to the plate down 0-2.
The Bulldog pitcher retired the first two batters in the bottom of the second inning before Bruin freshman Andrew Burger doubled on a line drive to left field recording the Bruins first hit of the game.
Trailing 0-3 going into the 6th and 7th inning, the Bruins left two on in the bottom of the fifth and left the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth with one out before Bulldog relief pitcher Jayden Frank struck out Bruin Adam Shew and Jacob Racho stranding three.
Bruin Roman Worthey who came in in relief in the top of the fifth shut down the Bulldogs in the top of the seventh sending the Bruin offense into the bottom half of the seventh down 0-3. But, it was not meant to be for the Bruins as Bulldog relief pitcher Jayden Frank struck out the side in order in the bottom of the seventh handing the Bulldogs the 0-3 win.
Although the Bruins out-hit the Bulldogs 4-3, the Bruins just could not overcome three errors on the day or get the timely hit when they needed it.
North Bend pitcher junior Mane Freeman #12 went five innings, allowing four hits and zero runs while striking out five to earn the win.
