Bruins Baseball Takes Season Opener

After rescheduling due to incoming weather on Monday, April 9th, the Bruins varsity baseball team took to the field against Douglas at Douglas in their 4A-3 Far West League opener.

The Bruins came out aggressive on the base paths early leaving 2 on the base paths after Worthy stole 3rd and Kleespies gets caught attempting to steal second.

 

Junior Roman Worthy went4 strong innings with 6 strikeouts, allowing 1 hit, 1 run and walked 3.

Junior Roman Worthy took the mound for the Bruins and wasted no time getting ahead of the Trojan hitters, striking out two and getting the lead-off hitter to pop out.

 

The Bruins got on the board in the 2nd after freshman Payton Armentrout singled on a line drive to right and freshman Andrew Burger scored from 3rd. Senior Jacob Racho hit a hard ground ball into left field and freshman Adam Shew scored after taking the walk earlier.

The Bruins would score again in the top of the 3rd after sophomore Manny Zamora tagged up to score after a deep sacrifice fly by freshman catcher Jacub McCullom putting the Bruins up 3-0. Worthy then shut down the Trojans batters in order in the bottom of the 2nd inning.

In the top of the 4th, the Bruins put freshman Payton Armentrout on the base paths after taking a walk. After a 1 out drive to the Trojan shortstop by senior Cody Testa, Armentrout was able to cross the plate on the throw to first putting the Bruins up 4-0 after 3.

But, it was in the bottom of the 4th that the Trojans finally got to Worthy on the mound as Worthy walked the first two batters he saw and a throwing error by on an attempted pickoff play allowed the Douglas runner to score from second.

Catcher Jacub McCullom would be hit by a pitch and score from 2nd in the top of the 5th after Adam Shew singled to left field.

In the bottom of the 5th, freshman Adam Shew #13 came in in relief of starting pitcher Junior Roman Worthy who went 4 strong innings for Coach Keith Wallin with 6 strikeouts, allowing 1 hit, 1 run and walked 3.

The Trojans later scored in the inning when the Trojans Cole Waldron ripped a triple past Bruin centerfielder sophomore Manny Zamora and was later brought in by the next Douglas batter making the score 5-2 after 5 innings.

The Bruins would go on to score one more run in the 6th after Manny Zamora smashed a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Armontrout making the final score 6-2 in their league opener. The Bruins are scheduled to face off against Douglas at home this Friday, April 13th in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
