Multiple agencies including the Smith River Fire Department, Gasquet Fire, Del Norte Ambulance, and the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Department assisted the California Highway Patrol regarding a single vehicle crash on U.S. Hwy. 199 north of South Fork Road just after 9:30am Sunday morning, January 19th.
A 2005 Ford F150, driven by Gasquet resident Robert Craig Johnson reportedly traveling southbound on U.S. Hwy. 199, lost control of the vehicle and left the roadway, traveled down a steep embankment, striking a large tree.
Johnson was located by first responding CHP officers unresponsive in the front seat of the vehicle before being extricated by emergency personnel and transported to the hospital where Mr. Johnson unfortunately succumbing to his injuries just after 10:30 am Sunday morning.
The incident remains under investigation and the California Highway Patrol is asking anyone with information pertaining to the incident is asked to contact the Crescent City CHP office at (707) 218-2000.
