Man Steals SUV from Car Jacker

On Friday, March 30th, just after 9:00 pm authorities from the Grants Pass Deparmant of Public Safety were dispatched after receiving a 911 call regarding the callers husband’s SUV had just been stolen.

The caller was able to provide the direction of travel of the stolen SUV, as well as a good description of the suspect after them male suspect threatened her husband with a knife.

Patrol officers and detectives responded to the call and located the vehicle as it was traveling west on NE A Street. Police units followed the vehicle as it traveled south on 8th Street, then west on NE D Street.

When the vehicle reached 6th Street, a traffic stop was attempted by marked police units. The suspect fled at a high rate of speed, failing to stop for traffic control devices at every intersection.

Due to the concern for public safety, the pursuit of the suspect was discontinued.

Approximately 20 minutes after the suspect fled from the police, the vehicle was seen by an alert citizen. The citizen called police and advised he was following the incident on his police scanner and believed the vehicle was stopped. The caller then advised that the suspect was out of vehicle and walking down Fruitdale Drive.

The caller noted that the stolen vehicle was unoccupied and the motor was still running. At some point, the caller got into the stolen vehicle and drove it away from where it was left by the suspect.

As the caller was driving from the area, he reported the suspect was chasing him on foot. The caller provided a description and the last known whereabouts of the suspect and left the area in the SUV.

25 year old Cedar Stehelin

Police units arrived within one minute and located the suspect, now running down Fruitdale drive. The suspect was told to stop and that he was under arrest. The suspect refused, and after being tased was taken into custody.

The suspect was identified as 25-year-old Cedar Stehelin from Cave Junction and is lodged at the Josephine County Jail.

The Grants Pass Deparmant of Public Safety would like to thank the alert citizen who reported the whereabouts of the stolen SUV. While the incident ended safely, direct involvement in the apprehension of the violent criminal suspects is not recommended or expected by the police.
