Bruin Girls Basketball Overpowers Bonanza in Pre-Season Matchup

Brookings Harbor varsity girls basketball coach and her 2024/25 girls basketball team held their first home game of the season after taking a decisive win earlier in the week against the Gold Beach Lady Panthers in Gold Beach Tuesday evening, hosting the Bonanza Antlers who made the long trip to the coast Thursday.

A confident Bruin girls team took to the court Thursday evening and pounced on the Lady Antlers early running on offense and challenging the Bonanza offense with a smothering full court press to start the game. As the defense caused turnovers and kept Bonanza off the scoreboard, the Bruin girls offense took advantage and an early 9-2 lead midway through the first.

Junior, Adison Hodges, #33, getting fouled on the shot, led all scorers with 16 points in the game.

The Bruin girls were relentless in the first quarter, keeping Bonanza off balance early with a physical press that caused multiple turnovers off of ball handling and relentless pressure. The Bruin girls would finish the first period with a nine point lead.

Leading 17-8 after dominating the first period, the Bruin girls continued to apply a full court press, however, Bonanza would solve the full court press riddle and find ways to get to the hoop. With some pressure defense of their own, the Bruin girls struggled to score early in the second allowing Bonanza to cut the lead to just 3 points.

Junior, Johanna Larson, #23, battling for the rebound under the defensive backboard also had 4 points in the game.

Both teams would battle for control to finish the first half as Bonanza would come all the way back to take a 21-21 tie into the locker room at the the half time break.

Junior, Ella Reneau, #32, looking for the baseline pass, went 1 for 2 from the line and had 11 points.

The second half started just as the first half ended with both teams running the court and scoring, keeping the score tied at 21-21 halfway through the third period.

Freshman, Kaiya Evans, #22, driving the key to the hoop for 2 of her points on the night.

But the rigors of travel and pace of the game caught up with Bonanza and the Bruin girls started to run off of Bonanza turnovers and would work to stretch their lead back up to nine points to take a 36-27 lead after three.

In the fourth, Bonanza just couldn’t keep pace with the press continuing frustrate the Bonanza offense and allowing only one Lady Antler basket halfway through the fourth as the Bruin girls extended their lead to 42-29, before closing out the game scoring six more points to take the 48-33 win.

The Bruin girls will next see preseason action traveling to Pleasant Hill next Thursday, December 13th, with tip-off scheduled for 6:00pm..
