High school sports programs are now well into their 2023/24 seasons, with many of the fall sports programs already coming to an end, and with that, our next outstanding Brookings-Harbor High School student athlete has been chosen Barron’s ‘Star Student Athlete’. Student athletes are selected by their coach’s for their outstanding efforts in the sports arena, as well as their exemplary scholastic and community participation.
This weeks selection, chosen by Bruin boys varsity soccer head coach, John Silveira, is senior, Tanner Nelson, a three sport varsity athlete who also plays on head coach Luke Beamans BHHS varsity basketball team, as well as running track for varsity Bruins track coach Jason Fulton. Nelson was chosen by head coach John Silveira for the hard work and growth that has made him a crucial part of this team.
“For the past three years, Tanner Nelson has worn the captain’s armband for the Brookings Harbor High School soccer team with pride and purpose, leading by example in work ethic, coach-ability, and resilience in the face of adversity.” coach Silveira said. On paper, Tanner’s stats tell part of the story with 47 shots, 14 goals, and 4 assists making him a constant offensive threat for the Bruins and his 14 goals are a testament to his skill, determination and his unselfish style of play.
Scholastically, Tanner has also excelled, balancing his athletic participation while carrying a 3.7 GPA in courses such as Weight Training, Language Arts IV, College Algebra, American Government and Civics, as well as Internship for Athletics and Activities. When asked what his plans are for after his BHHS soccer career, Tanner said he intends to attend college and work his way into law enforcement and possibly become an Oregon State Trooper.
“As a team captain, Tanner has been the backbone of our team, guiding his teammates with confidence and heart on and off the field, rallying players in challenging moments, offering encouragement, and holding the team to a high standard. Tanner embodies these qualities in every game and every practice, pushing himself to be the best version of himself so that others might do the same. For the last three years, his leadership has shaped a culture of dedication and teamwork that will resonate long after he graduates.”
For coaches John Silveira, Ashley Pruitt, and Carlos Lira, Tanner has been more than just a player for Brookings Harbor, he has been a pillar of the team, proving his self through work ethic, coach-ability, and resilience through adversity and will leave an indelible mark on the field and in the hearts of his coaches, teammates, and fans and his influence will continue to shape Brookings Harbor soccer for years to come.
Congratulations Tanner, we are confident that you will continue to be successful in any future endeavor you should choose to pursue.
