Hwy. 199 Crash Leaves One Man Dead

Early Tuesday afternoon, October 29th, multiple agencies including Rural Metro Fire Department, Josephine County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash on Hwy 199, at the intersection with Helms Road, in Josephine County.

Preliminary investigation indicated a Nissan Sentra, operated by 22 year old Joshua Chaska Patrick of Abbotsford, British Columbia, was traveling northbound and failed to stop at a stop sign and entered the highway.

Upon entering Hwy 199, the Nissan was struck by a northbound Kenworth dump truck, operated by 85 year old Uwe Jens Stehnike of Grants Pass, causing the Kenworth to roll onto it’s side. The operator of the Kenworth was declared deceased at the scene.

Patrick, the operator of the Nissan fled the scene on foot and was later arrested nearby the scene before he was provided medical treatment at an area hospital.

The highway was impacted for approximately one hour during the on-scene investigation.
