Girls varsity volleyball became the third fall sport to enter league play, as head coach Vanessa Nidiffer and her varsity girls volleyball team hosted the Rogue River Lady Chieftains Thursday evening.

Coming off a two game win streak to end post-season play against both Pacific and Gold Beach, coach Nidiffer sent a relaxed and confident group to the floor to start the first match, and the Bruin girls jumped out to a 7-4 lead early.

Strong play at the net kept the Lady Chieftains off the scoreboard as the Bruin girls allowed only 1 Rogue River point in the set to go to record the 25-9 win in the first set.

The Bruin girls continued to keep the pressure on the Lady Chieftains, again taking an early 7-3 lead. The Bruin girls defense kept the ball on Rogue River’s side of the net, forcing mistakes on their way to taking the 25-10 win in the second set.

But the Lady Chieftains weren’t done yet, scrambling to stay in the match, keeping up with the Bruin girls and taking an early 7-8 lead.

Rogue River stayed with the Bruin girls offensively throughout the match exchanging leads late before the Bruin girls forced the action creating opportunities at the net to take the lead late and finish the set with a 25-20 win and the match in three straight sets.

“It was great to begin our league play with a win tonight against Rogue River and it was a quality team effort. We look forward to continuing to improve as the season progresses.” coach Nidiffer said after the match.

The Bruin girls will be on the road to Medford to challenge the St. Mary’s Lady Crusaders next Tuesday in Medford, with the first serve set for 6:00pm.
