The Josephine County Sheriff’s Office received a citizen report Friday, May 17th, regarding an unattended backpack and dog leash that was found on the Rogue River Trail with no sign of a person or dog in the area.
The reporting party stated that they noticed the backpack on their way down the trail. Upon seeing the backpack and belongings still in place later that afternoon on their way out, the citizen made a report to the Sheriff’s Office.
A Josephine County Sheriff’s Office deputy hiked the trail on Saturday May 18th, locating the backpack on the trail approximately 1 mile south of the Grave Creek Boat Ramp, however, a search with verbal call-outs failed to locate a person or dog.
A drone was also utilized in an attempt to locate the owner and further investigation revealed the backpack has possibly been in that location since Wednesday, May 15th.
No identifying information was found in the pack and the contents suggested the owner was preparing to start a multi-day camping trip and items in the pack did not appear to have been used.
The Sheriff’s Office is concerned the owner of the backpack may have become injured or lost, however, no missing persons reports have been filed that match the situation nor is there any evidence of foul play and the Sheriff’s Office is actively trying to locate the owner of the backpack.
If you have any information regarding the backpack or who the owner may be, please contact the Josephine County Sheriff’s Office 541-474-5123.
