Head coach John Silveira and his Bruins boys varsity soccer team burst out of the gates to start the 2023/24 season taking their first three games decisively scoring 21 points in those three games.
The Bruins sophomore goal keeper, RJ Hendrix, recorded his third clean sheet Friday afternoon making it difficult to decide which part of the Bruins team is performing better, the offense and their 21 points in three games, or the Bruin defense that has shut down three teams in a row, allowing 0 points.
Friday against the Lost River Pirates, who came into the game on a 3 game win streak of their own, it took the Bruin offense all of nineteen minutes to take a 1-0 lead after sophomore Neric Garcia, #7, found a loose ball in front of the Pirate goal and put it behind the Lost River goal keeper.
That would open the door for the Bruins junior Tanner Anderson, #17, who would score just four minutes later and then once again at the 32:00 minute mark off a cross from sophomore Conrad Watkins, #8, giving the Bruins a 3-0 lead with just 8 minutes left in the first half. But Anderson wasn’t done yet, getting the hat-trick after a header got past the Pirate keeper giving the Bruins a 4-0 lead at the half.
Lost River made their adjustments during the break tightening up their backline, turning away Bruin offensive pushes to start the second half. However, again, just 9 minutes into the second half, the Bruins drove down the left side and Bruin senior, Josiah Figueroa, #10, found the back of the net, making it 5-0.
The Pirate defense stuck to their defensive adjustments and continued to slow the Bruin offense, disrupting the Bruins midfield play aggressively attacking Bruins attempting to control the ball off of traps or in the passing lanes. Ultimately the Bruins speed would prevail handing the Bruins their third straight shut-out win.
The now 3-0 Bruins travel to Grants Pass next Tuesday to challenge the 3-1-1 Douglas Knights, coming off a two game win streak of their own, with a 3:30pm kick-off.
