As previously mentioned in the January 30th “Unauthorized Entry to Motor Vehicle” press release, the Brookings area has seen an increase in thefts from unlocked vehicles, storage units, and businesses over the past month.
Jason Lee Ivie, 23-year-old, Brookings resident Vernon Wayne Ivie, 56-year-old, new Brookings resident
Brookings Police responded to information received from citizens and determined a likely suspect in the recent thefts was 23-year-old Jason Lee Ivie. Attempts were made to contact Mr. Ivie and increased patrols were initiated around his residence in Brookings.
After the first night of increased patrols, and numerous unsuccessful attempts to contact and interview Mr. Ivie, the Brookings Police Department observed no new thefts. Extra patrols, surveillance, and more attempts to contact Mr. Ivie continued and on February 2nd, Mr. Ivie was found to be in possession of stolen property during a traffic stop near his residence.
Mr. Ivie was subsequently arrested and lodged in the Curry County Jail for Theft by Receiving.
On February 2nd, the Brookings Police Department executed a search warrant at Mr. Ivie’s residence and located additional stolen property, including two confirmed stolen firearms, and illegal narcotics.
Mr. Ivie’s father, 56-year-old Vernon Wayne Ivie, was located at the residence during the search warrant. Mr. Vernon Ivie was arrested and lodged in the Curry County Jail for Unlawful Possession of Methamphetamine. Additional charges are expected for Mr. Jason Ivie and Mr. Vernon Ivie.
Officers at the Brookings Police Department are continuing their investigations and contacting victims to identify more suspected stolen property.
Currently, Mr. Jason Ivie was found to be in possession of stolen property from at least five different cases.
