After reaching the halfway point in the Lady Bruins basketball season, the team went on the road and made the long trip to Douglas High School in Winston Oregon. The match-up was equally important to the 3-2 Lady Trojans as it was to 4-1 Lady Bruins.

Douglas jumped on the Lady Bruins early in the first jumping to a 5-0 lead quickly. After the Lady Bruins settled into the game Sophomore guard Sidney Alexander #11 hit a 3 point shot starting the Lady Bruin scoring run in the first period. The Lady Bruins spread the scoring out getting four shooters in the books in the period. Lexi Schofield #1, Brianna Humphrey #4, and Chloe McCrae #44 all hit buckets in the period and senior guard Abby Farmer #00 added two free throws to Alexanders 3 pointer matching a determined Lady Trojan team at 11 after the first.

In the second period Coach, Schofield’s game plan became quite evident as the Lady Bruins began pounding the ball inside the key. Lexi Schofield #1 was the beneficiary as she hit two baskets in the paint and when they couldn’t get the shot in the key, they dumped it out to a hot-handed Sidney Alexander who hit another 3 pointer from the corner and got credit for a 2 pointer from the same spot with her toe on the 3 point arc. Abby Farmer hit her first bucket of the game and Brianna Humphrey added one from the free throw line.

When the Wild Coast Compass asked Coach Schofield if the inside game was intentional, he said “We wanted to play through our posts and I thought they really performed well tonight”.

But it was the defense in the second period that created the scoring gap in the game. The Lady Bruins 2-3 man zone defense frustrated the Lady Trojans shooting in the period and the tougher shots resulted in missed opportunities for Douglas as the Lady Bruins held the Lady Trojans to just 7 points in the period. In the second period, the Lady Bruins hit for 12 points in the second quarter sending the teams to the locker room with the Lady Bruins leading 23-18.

The Lady Bruins continued their inside-outside attack into the third period going on a 7 point run and extending their lead to 30-18 at about the halfway mark in the period. Douglas put a soft press on the Lady Bruins which ignited and 6 point run of their own in the period closing the gap.

The Lady Trojans came out with a press in the fourth in a desperate attempt to close the scoring gap. Hitting two 3’s brought the Lady Trojans within 1 point with under two minutes in the period. The Lady Bruins fought to keep their lead late and got the ball in Abby Farmers hand where she fouled and sent to the line as time was running out on Douglas. Abby Farmer stepped up to the line and buried 4 of 4 free throws as time ran out.

Coach Schofield spoke about his team’s performance after the game saying, “It was great to get a win… We got great minutes out of a lot of kids. Chloe McCrae gave us a huge lift tonight. We wanted to keep them off of the free throw line and didn’t do a great job executing that part of the game plan. But we did do a great job taking care of the ball tonight. I thought our girls did a really good job holding on late in the game when Douglas really came on strong”.

The Lady Bruins took the game 41-36 extending their record to 5-1 in league play. Senior guard Abby Farmer #00 quietly led all scorers with 13 points off of two baskets, one 3 pointer and going 6 for 6 from the line. Sophomore guard Sidney Alexander #11 had one of her best games hitting for 11 points off of three 3 pointers and a basket. Senior center Chloe McCrae #44 worked hard under the basket hitting three baskets and went 2 for 5 from the free throw line. Freshman forward Lexi Schofield #1 also was effective in the paint hitting three buckets for 6 points on the night and senior forward Brianna Humphrey #4 scored once and hit 1 of 2 from the free throw line.

The Lady Bruins are on the road again next Tuesday traveling to 0-6 Siuslaw.
