The Crescent City Police Department, responded to Home Depot Friday afternoon, April 7th, regarding reports of a vehicle with with open containers of alcohol inside.
The driver of the vehicle, who was initially inside Home Depot upon arrival of first responders, then attempted to leave the scene.
Officers then conducted a traffic stop of the vehicle contacting the driver, identified as 24 year old Alexander Elkins.
Officers were then advised from Home Depot staff that Elkins had just shoplifted items from the store resulting in Elkins being arrested for shoplifting.
During an inventory search of Elkins vehicle by Officers, a loaded stolen handgun from the Sacramento area and drug paraphernalia were found. Further investigation by Officers revealed that the vehicle was embezzled from Avis Car Rental.
Elkins was booked into the Del Norte County Jail for shoplifting, felon in possession of firearm, possession of loaded firearm, misdemeanor possession of stolen property, felon in possession of ammo, and Carrying concealed firearm.
The investigation into the embezzled vehicle is still ongoing.
