On Friday night, after a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem by Aurora Harrington, a high energy Lady Bruins team walked out into an equally high energy Bruins arena prepared to take on an undefeated Marshield Lady Pirate team determined to protect their 1st place status.
Both teams came out testing the other, tentatively trying different things to see what worked and what didn’t. As the teams went back and forth in the period it took 3 minutes of play before either team would get points on the board. The Marshfield Lady Pirates would strike first after getting fouled in the lane and hitting one of two from the line taking a 1 point lead with 5:00 minutes left in the period.
The Lady Pirates would hold the Lady Bruins to just 4 points in the quarter while scoring 8 points themselves. Senior guard Abby Farmer #00 hit a basket and senior center Brianna Humphrey #4 also had a basket.
The second quarter had both teams breaking out in the scorebook as the pace picked up and the Lady Bruins outscored Marshfield 17-16 closing the gap to just 3 points at the half.
Freshman forward Lexi Schofield #1 hit for 5 points in the quarter with a basket and a 3 pointer. Abby Farmer added 7 points with 2 baskets and a 3 pointer and center Brianna Humphrey went to work under the basket getting fouled and hitting 3 of 4 free throws as the teams would go to the locker rooms with Marshfield leading 21-24.
As the third period progressed, Marshfield upped their aggressiveness pushing and blocking out the Lady Bruins under the basket limiting the Lady Bruins opportunities at rebounds. Lack of second shot opportunities held the Lady Bruins to just 9 points in the third period with Abby Farmer hitting a late 3 pointer and two free throws, Avana Pettus hitting a bucket and Brianna Humphrey continuing to work in the key and hitting her two free throws. The Lady Pirates hit for 13 in the period and extended their lead to 30-38.
In the fourth quarter, the ‘deny Abby Farmer an open look at the basket’ strategy deployed throughout the game didn’t stop Farmer from finding the hoop. Farmer hot three baskets and a free throw scoring 7 of the Lady Bruins 11 points in that quarter. Brianna Humphrey and senior forward Chloe McCrae both scored buckets in the final period.
Abby Farmer led all scorers in the game with 21 points off of six baskets, two 3 pointers, and 3 free throws. Brianna Humphrey had 9 points on the night off of 2 baskets and 5 free throws. Junior guard Mickey Fulton #2, Avana Pettus and Chloe McCrae each had a basket in the books as the Lady Bruins suffered their first league loss to Marshfield 41-49.
The Lady Bruins will try to get back in the win column next week when they travel to 3-2 Douglas next Tuesday.
