Incredibly, after just four days since the original early Monday morning slide on Hwy. 101 where a 200 yard segment of Highway 101 dropped several feet beneath the original road surface south of Port Orford, the Oregon Department of Transportation announced Friday afternoon, January 13th, that one lane of Hwy. 101 was open to all traffic.
Crews will be flagging vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic through the temporary single gravel lane bypass extending approximately 200 yards through the collapsed section of the landslide area.
Motorists should expect delays traveling through the slide area. The temporary lane has no vehicle weight limitations or restrictions, and vehicles with loads wider than 14 feet will be monitored and evaluated on an individual basis.
Even though the slide area has been stable since Tuesday, the Oregon Department of Transportation will continue to monitor the situation for any more landslide activity, and warns that the highway may need to be closed again on short notice should further slide activity be detected.
The Oregon Department of Transportation expects to open additional temporary gravel traffic lanes through the slide area over the next few weeks as long term repairs to the highway are determined.
