The Azalea Middle School Bruins started their boys basketball season this week. On Thursday evening the Riley Creek Cubs from Gold Beach traveled to Brookings and squared off against the Bruins.

The Bruins came out after the tip and began with a man to man full press. The Cubs played tough but the press frustrated Riley Creek early which led to turnovers and fast-break points.

Jake Beaman #45 led the Bruins scorers putting 5 points while Fabian Villa #15, Brad Russell #42 put 4 points a piece on the board in the 1st period. Fabian Villa #15 led the Cubs scoring with 4 points in the period as Trenton Sterns #13 hit a 3 pointer while Kai Seibert #25 and Landyn Miller #11 both hit buckets in the period.

The Bruins jumped out with a 7-0 run to start the game but the Cubs fought back with a 7-4 run of their own as time ran out in the first period with the Bruins taking a 19-11 lead after one period.

The Bruins ran on the Cubs early in the second period going on a 10-4 streak and giving the Bruins 29-15 lead mid-way through the 2nd period. Demitri Pacino #31 put 6 points in the scorebook in the second period lead Bruin scorers. Fabian Villa and Brad Russell added 4 points to their totals, and Jake Beaman hit a bucket and got to the line three times making good on all his free throws.

Leading the Cubs in the 2nd period was Landyn Miller #11 with a 3 pointer and a basket for 5 points as Trenton Sterns #13 hit his second 3 pointer in the game and Eamon Gustofsen #43 hit for a bucket as only 3 Riley Creek players could get on the board in the period.

Riley Creek came out after the half with pressure from a trap defense slowing down the Bruins temporarily. The Bruins passed their way out of the traps and added 19 points in the quarter led by Demitri Pacino #31 who matched his 2nd periods 6 points with 6 more as Fabian Villa hit a 3 pointer, Seth Byrd #25 added 4 points to his totals and Brad Russell and Jake Beaman hit a basket each in the period.

Trenton Sterns #13 hit for 6 points in the period highlighted with a 3 pointer, Eamon Gustofsen #43 hit a basket and a free throw, and Tristan May got on the board with a bucket of his own as the Bruins took a 59-32 lead into the 4th period.

In the 4th period the Bruins would only allow 3 Riley Creek scorers in the period as Tristan May got on the board with 3 more bucket and 6 points in the period, Jimmy Moore #35 got in the books with a bucket and Trenton Sterns #13 added a bucket to his 14 points to lead all scorers in the game.

The Bruins would win the game 67-42 with Fabian Villa #15 leading Bruins scoring with 13 points.
