The Bruin girls varsity soccer team was home Monday afternoon after being on the road in Grants Pass and Medford for their last two games, and bringing home a 3-1 victory against St. Mary’s last Thursday afternoon.
As the 2022/23 season begins to wind down, the 4-5-2 Bruin girls are looking to finish the season strong, and hosting the 0-11 Coquille Lady Red Devils, the Bruin girls looked to add a win to the record.
The Bruin girls wasted no time asserting control of the game early, taking the opening kick and immediately controlling the mid-field attack.
Senior mid-fielder Ivy Tuttle, #8, took control of a loose ball just outside the penalty box and took the outside shot, finding the back of the net for the Bruin girls just 3:30 into the contest.
Coquille tightened their defense, and successfully pushed the Bruin girls attack to the edges, while clearing the ball for fast break opportunities and opening the playing field to better control possessions, however, the Bruin girls defense would bend and not break, sweeping away scoring opportunities, and taking a 1-0 lead into the half time break.
The second half of play started much the same as the first, as both teams worked to control loose ball and field position.
The Bruin girls Ivy Tuttle, #8, would again recover a loose ball behind the Lady Red Devil midfield, and advance it to the edge of the penalty box and take a long outside shot that would find its way over the Coquille keeper and into the net, giving the Bruin girls a 2-0 lead just over 6:00 minutes into the second half.
The Bruin girls defense continued to hold the Lady Red Devils scoreless through out the half as Coquille struggled to put together an offensive attack and get a shot on goal.
Attacks on the Coquille goal became more frequent as the Bruin girls established control of the mid-field, and senior Zoe Carlson, #11 put the game away with a 30′ shot from the top of the penalty area at the 62:00 minute mark.
The now 5-5-2 Bruin girls will be on the road again this Thursday, traveling to Sutherlin to take on the 11-1 Lady Bulldogs, coming off a 5 game win streak and who’s only loss is to the undefeated North Valley Lady Knights earlier in the season.
