The Brookings-Harbor boys varsity basketball team won their first game of the FarWest/Skyline Crossover tournament at Hidden Valley High Friday afternoon. With that victory, the Brookings-Harbor boys were matched up Saturday afternoon with the tournament hosts, Hidden Valley Mustangs. The Mustangs came into the contest with a 5-9 record after a win of the own Friday against South Umpqua.
The high energy Bruins from Friday walked onto the hardwood Saturday and picked up right where they left off. The Bruins jumped all over the Mustangs early behind the hot hand of junior guard Brig Schofield who put 8 points on the board with two 3 pointers in the first quarter. Schofield and junior guard Eli Mills put the Bruins up 12-6 by the end of the first period.
The Mustangs struggled against the Bruins signature 2-3 man zone and could not put any offense together with any consistency. The Bruins took full advantage of the Mustangs and senior guard Gabe Barneburg stepped up with three 3 pointers as he and guard Austin Fronckowiak carried the Bruins to a 19 point 2nd period. Junior center Jon Kleespies took control of the lane and contributed 2 points while getting to the free throw line twice in the quarter. The Bruins would take a commanding 31-13 lead into the locker room at the halftime break.
Brookings-Harbor came out a little flat in the third quarter with some careless passing and turnovers allowing the Mustangs to score 10 in the period. Junior guard Luke Beaman carried the Bruins in the quarter with 5 points including a 3 pointer. Eli Mills scored and Brig Schofield added another 3 as the Bruins maintained their lead matching the Mustangs 10 points in the period with 10 points of their own.
The Bruins went into the 4th period with a 41-21 lead controlling the game from the start. The Bruins added 11 points in the 4th period, controlled inside the key and shot well from the outside. Brookings-Harbor had eight players in the scoring column with senior guard Gabe Barneburg leading all scorers with 12 points on four 3 pointers, junior guard Brig Schofield had three 3 pointers and 11 points on the day as junior guards Austin Fronckowiak and Luke Beaman added 8 points each.
Coach Gonzales will take a confident team into their season opener against a 5-8 Douglas team at home this Friday at 7:30 pm.
