BHHS Girls Varsity Drop Tournament Opener in OT Heartbreaker

The 5-8 Lady Bruins drew the 9-3 Henley Hornets in their first-round matchup of the Farwest/Skyline Crossover preseason tournament at North Valley High School. Coach
Schofield has assembled a group of young lady’s that aren’t paying attention to their opponents records as they are showing up and giving anybody a game.

The Lady Bruins jumped out early on the Hornets and led early in the first half. Senior guard Abby Farmer would collect 2 touch fouls in the first half putting her in early foul trouble. Henley would take advantage by focusing their offense on Farmer forcing her to risk a foul or allow the shot.

The Lady Bruins mixed their defenses up in the first half with good shooting and strong inside play by freshman forward Lexi Schofield and senior center Brianna Humphrey that led the Lady Bruins to a 20-13 halftime lead.

The third quarter was not friendly to the Lady Bruins who came out with a defensive scheme that the Hornets took advantage of by throwing the ball over the top of the defense. The Hornets then went on a 21-4 run, outscoring the Lady Bruins by 10 points as they put 23 points on the board to the Lady Bruins 10.

Henley continued to push their offense at Abby Farmer attempting to get her into foul trouble. Fouls played a huge part in this contest as touch fouls sent the Hornets to the free throw line 25 times in the game to the Lady Bruins 13. Henley’s senior guard Tanner Higgins would get to the line 12 times herself in the game hitting 11 free throw attempts. Lady Bruins Lexi Schofield and Brianna Humphrey battled under the boards the entire game with Schofield never getting to the foul line and Humphrey getting to the foul line once in the entire game.

The fourth period was back and forth as the Lady Bruins came out with a full court press eventually causing a late 4th quarter Henley turnover that junior guard Sidney Alexander would take to the hoop and get fouled. The Lady Bruins would trail by 3 with seconds left. A Lady Bruin defensive rebound would lead to a missed 3 point shot and desperate rebound by Brianna Humphrey. Humphrey would get the ball to Lexi Schofield who hit the 3 point shot as time expired dramatically sending the contest to overtime.

The overtime period was a continuation of the fourth quarter, back and forth until a ridiculous technical foul is called on the Lady Bruins BENCH late in the period. As the game went back and forth, apparently according to Coach Schofield, the official “told our girls on the bench to sit down. They did and kept clapping. He took it as a personal affront to him and t’d them up for clapping”. An unfortunate call at an unfortunate time. The Technical Foul led to 2 free throws and possession of the ball which they subsequently went on to score providing the Hornets with a 4 point swing. The Lady Bruins would not recover, and ultimately lose the game by that same 4 point swing 60-56.

Coach Schofield said “We dug ourselves a big hole in the 3rd quarter. But our girls showed great resilience. Alonna Nalls gave us a huge lift off the bench in the 4th quarter when we pressed”.

Abby Farmer led all scorers with 24 points, 5 of them 3’s, Lexi Schofield had four 3’s and 14 points, and the Lady Bruins spread out their scoring with 7 players scoring in the game.

The Lady Bruins will meet up with a 6-5 Klamath Union team today at 3:45 pm.
