The Bruin girls varsity volleyball team hosted the 0-2 Sutherlin Lady Bulldogs Tuesday night, featuring two teams looking for their first win in this early season, and the first set was a preview of what was to come.
As the Bruin girls get sets under their belt, their confidence on the court is becoming both noticeable and contagious. As the first set unfolded both teams traded points, either tied or within a point through out the set. At 10-10 midway through the set the Bruin girls front line asserted itself, dominating play above the net offensively and defensively, leading to a 29-27 first set win for the Bruins.
The second set was much of the same, however, the hustle plays on the Sutherlin side of the court would pick up their play, and again trade points with the Bruin girls, trading points and leads through out the set. The Lady Bulldogs would hold on to win the set 26-28, and tie the match.
In the third set Sutherlin took an early lead, and though the Bruin girls closed the gap and kept the set close, but errors in the back court cost the Bruin girls and the Lady Bulldogs easily took the set and a 1-2 lead in the match.
Now trailing 1-2 the Bruin girls trailed by as much as 8 points early in the set, but again senior Ashley Schofield and junior Aleah Muro dominated play at the net and the Bruins roared back to tie and take the lead late, on their way to winning the set 25-23, and tie the match at 2-2.
In the final set, the Bruins never led, and though it was close, the Lady Bulldogs shut down a late Bruin girls surge to take the final set, 8-15, as well as the match, 2-3.
The Bruin girls will travel to Lakeview to take on the Lady Honkers this Friday evening, September 23rd, at 5:00pm.
