The Bruin boys varsity baseball team traveled to Medford Tuesday afternoon to start the final scheduled regular season 3 game series against the 6-6 St. Mary’s Crusaders, looking to get a series win before post season play gets ready to begin.
The Bruin bats again failed to show up in the first inning, with the lead-off and the top of the order going down in order with two strike-outs and an infield grounder after seeing just 14 pitches. Coach Wallin sent senior right-hander Jason DeShon, #16 to the mound for the Bruins, and DeShon struck out the Crusader’s lead-off batter in three pitches and finished off the St. Mary’s half of the first inning retiring the next two batters in six pitches.
But the Bruins would take advantage of a Crusader error in the top of second, getting the lead-off of the basepaths and loading the bases with another error and a walk before a third St. Mary’s error would open the door to a 7 run inning including a Ethan Orman in the park 3 run home-run. DeShon responded with a shut-down inning sitting three Crusader bats down in order to take a 7-0 lead into the third.
Brookings would add a couple more runs in the top of the fourth, putting together two singles and a double. DeShon retired the side in the bottom half of the fourth, getting two out on routine infield grounders before ending the fourth with a Crusader strike-out swinging.
In the sixth inning, after the Bruins added another run to take a 10-0 lead, the Crusaders would catch up to Bruin pitching, and a walk, a single, a triple and a Bruin error would allow 3 St. Mary’s runs in the bottom of the sixth, making the score 10-3 Bruins going into the final inning of play.
Neither team could add to the score in the seventh, giving the Bruins the 10-3 win to take the first game of the three game series. The Bruins will host the Crusaders to finish the series and regular season play Friday afternoon with the first pitch scheduled at 3:00pm.
