Bruin Girls Struggle Against Undefeated Lady Lancers

The 6-0 Brookings girls varsity softball team made the trip to Myrtle Creek, Tuesday afternoon, to take on the South Umpqua Lady Lancers, in a battle of undefeateds.

Two strong teams took the field Tuesday afternoon, and the offensive onslaught of the Bruin girls in the past 7 games, abandoned them in the first half of the first inning, as the South Umpqua pitching shut down the Bruin girls. Head Coach Tony Baron sent #22, Maddy Taylor to the circle for the Bruin girls, and South Umpqua got their lead-off on the basepaths with a walk, and put together three singles and two more walks to jump out to an early 0-5 lead.

The Bruin girls continued to be cold at the plate in their half of the second inning, going down after working deep counts and getting one on with a walk, but failing to advance the runner and put any runs on the board. Senior right-hander, Jordan Crosby relieved Taylor to start the second for the Bruin girls, striking out two, and holding the Lady Lancers scoreless.

The Bruin girls would start at the top of the line-up in the third and #5, Hannah James, worked herself on base with a four pitch walk, but the Bruin girls hitting woes continued, striking out in order ending any Bruin girls threat. Crosby then answered, gettin the Lady Lancers out in order, striking out one.

But South Umpqua pitching continued to dominate the Bruin girls in the fourth before catching up to the Bruin girls Jordan Crosby pitching, putting 5 more runs on the board to extend their lead to 0-10 to enter the fifth inning.

The Bruin girls then rallied with two out in the top of the fifth when Jo Pryor, #16, took a 3-2 pitch to left field before Jordan Crosby went deep to centerfield with a two run homer getting the Bruin girls on the scoreboard late. South Umpqua would add two runs to end the game 2-12, after scoring two in the bottom of the fifth, handing the Bruin girls their first regular season loss.

The Bruin girls and the Lady Lancers will match up again to complete the three game series at home Friday afternoon, with the first pitch scheduled for 3:00pm.
