Bruins Take Home Tournament Hardware

Both the Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball teams spent their past weekend on the road at the Yreka Miner Invitational tournament.

The preseason basketball tournament season is traditionally a time when teams wear the rust off and get their feet under themselves learning new plays and working themselves into game shape. Coaches typically choose tournaments that aren’t out of reach, yet will pose specific challenges to evaluate where and what areas the team needs to focus on to be successful when league play begins.

Both teams would return with similar and respectable 1-2 records after facing teams that physically and strategically posed different types of games and conditions to be overcome.

However, both varsity boys Coach Buell Gonzales Jr., as well as varsity girls Coach Chris Schofield, had individual performances that did not go unrecognized.

Some of the extra hardware that came home with the Bruins was the offensive all-tournament award presented to Eli Mills, and the defensive all-tournament award taken home by Austin Fronkowiak.

The Lady Bruins Brianna Humphrey was the teams defensive MVP. Brianna had 3.3 points per game, with 9 steals, but she was a beast on the boards with 8.7 rebounds per game and 14 deflections.

Abby Farmer was the Lady Bruins offensive MVP. For the weekend, Abby led the team with 15 points per game, 7 rebounds per game and 3 assists per game.  She made seven 3 point shots and was 10/15 at the free throw line.

Lady Bruins senior guard #00 Abby Farmer also brought home the girls 3-point shooting contest. In a contest that featured 9 shooters from a variety of schools, Farmer set the school record with 12 made 3-point shots in 60 seconds and followed that with 10 more in the final 30 seconds. Ultimately Farmer hit 22 3-point shots in the 90 seconds allotted becoming the Girls 3-point Champion.

Both the Varsity Boys and Varsity Lady Bruins take to the hardwood tonight at home in a preseason matchup with the Hidden Valley Mustangs. The Lady Bruins will tip-off first at 6:00 pm followed by the Boys Varsity at 7:30 pm.
