Coach Schofield and his Bruin girls basketball team were on the road Wednesday, traveling to Winston to take on the Douglas Lady Trojans who were in Brookings just two weeks ago. The Bruins took the win back in January, and the 4-2 Lady Trojans were looking to get that win back.
The Lady Trojans picked up right where they left off in the first contest, high energy pressure defense and fast break opportunities off of Brookings-Harbor turnovers. The trapping defense in the paint shut down the Bruin girls offense under the basket, forcing the offense to come from jump shots. The Bruin girls only hit one basket in the first period, and half of the Bruins girls points came off of freethrows.
In the second quarter, the Bruin girls put three girls in the scorebook, as Marissa Scott #15 fought for 4 points in the paint, but the Bruin girls could only manage to go 2 or 5 after doing the work to get to the freethrow line, and outside shooting struggled to find the bottom of the net. Douglas continued to score, getting four players to hit for 10 points in the period and sending the Lady Trojans into the locker room leading 12-18.
The Lady Trojans came out in the second half and continued to pressure the ball, and allowed only 4 Bruin girls to score two baskets in the key from Ashlyn Schofield in the third period. The Lady Trojans had 4 players score in the period as Douglas added 13 points in the third.
Trailing 21-36 going into the final period, the Bruin girls attacked the basket in the fourth, could not capitalize, going 0 for 7 at the freethrow line. Ashlyn Schofield led all Bruin girls scorers in the game with 11 points in the game, as the Bruin girls suffered their second league loss of the season.
“Pretty ugly game tonight” coach Schofield said after the game, We were a step slow defensively most of the night. Still found a way to get enough stops to keep it within reach” he continued. “But we were so bad offensively that we just didn’t give ourselves a fighting chance and going 4 of 16 at the free throw line was just indicative of our struggles putting the ball in the basket.”
The Bruin girls will be on the road again this Friday evening at 5:30pm traveling to Sutherlin in a rematch of this last Saturday afternoons game where the Bruin girls suffered their first league loss of the season.
