Early Sunday afternoon, November 7th, the Del Norte Sheriff’s Office received a report that a man and a woman had been swept off of the Crescent City Jetty at approximately 12:40pm.
An immediate multi-agency response including Del Norte Sheriff’s Deputies and Search and Rescue, Crescent City Police Department, and Crescent City Fire and Rescue, responded to the jetty.
Upon arrival, the couple was located in the water clinging to rocks at the edge of the jetty. A rescue raft was deployed and the victims were retrieved and transported to a waiting Del Norte Ambulance where treatment for the victims injuries sustained in the fall and for hypothermia were initiated.
“This is yet another example of how waves can unexpectedly crash over the jetty and very forcefully knock people into the cold water. Too many people use poor judgement and ignore the warning signs, and some incidents end in tragedy. This incident also placed several First Responders into a hazardous situation. Luckily, this incident ended in a successful rescue without additional injuries.” Sheriff Waltz said.
