The National Park Service reported an active fire situation in Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park Monday afternoon August 15th.
As a result, Howland Hill road was closed at the west gate just outside Crescent City, however, the road was open at the east end, near Hiouchi.
A helicopter from the Department of Forestry made water drops to ensure that fire did not spread into the surrounding wilderness area.
The seasonal footbridge across the river connecting Stout Grove and the Jedediah Smith State Park Campground remain open, and all visitors are advised to avoid the area and to be respectful of fire and response crews.
