Delta Variant Rises as ‘Breakthrough Cases’ Grow to near 20% of all Cases

As the Delta variant and COVID-19 cases increase in both the state and nationwide, a different set of numbers that may be just as important are coming to light. The new variable are the ‘breakthrough cases’.  

Vaccine breakthrough cases are defined as instances in which an individual received a positive COVID-19 test result at least 14 days following the completion of any COVID-19 vaccine series.  

Through July 31st, Oregon Health Authority has identified 4,196 COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough cases. Oregon saw more than 12,500 new coronavirus cases in the state during the month of July and according to an Oregon Health Authority monthly report, almost 1 in 5 cases, or 19% of the states new cases this past month, were among people who had been fully vaccinated.  

In Oregon, 7 counties are responsible for 73% of all breakthrough cases with Multnomah County leading the way with 855 cases.   Vaccination rates for the state slowed even further in the past week as the state sat at 68.8% vaccinated last week, and to date, now sits at 69.4% an increase of .6% in the past week, and a total of 1.0% in the past 2 weeks. Oregon Health Authority, said Friday, July 17th, that the fully vaccinated are well protected from COVID, including the delta variant.  

The Oregon Health Authority has reported a total of 260 new Delta variant cases, an increase 130 new cases in the state.   As of Friday, August, 6th, the state of Oregon had tested 5,787,824 individuals, an increase of 163,517 individuals and now over 1,498,384 more people than the states 4,289,440 population. 5,462,619 have tested negative for the novel COVID-19 virus and 325,205 have tested positive. Oregon has recorded 7,144 new cases in the past week, and 226,899 total cases. Individuals hospitalized rose to 257 hospitalizations statewide in the past week, and now stands at 12,591. In the past week 31 deaths were recorded statewide, and Oregonians who have unfortunately succumbed to COVID-19 has now reached 2,889 in the entire state since the pandemic began.    

Curry County’s latest numbers as reported Friday, August 6th, by the Oregon Health Authority, now reports 10 breakthrough cases after testing 14,728 individuals with 13,916 negative tests, 812 total positive COVID-19 tests and after adding 21 new cases in the last week according to the latest data from the Oregon Health Authority and has recorded 812 total cases and 12 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

Del Norte County Department of Health and Human Services reported testing 15,945 individuals, with 14,107 negative results, after adding 25 new cases in the past week now reaching 1,838 total confirmed cases reported by Public Health, with 159 active cases, 10 current hospitalizations and 8 deaths.

Coos County to the north, reported 26 breakthrough cases after testing 59,105 individuals last week with 56,192 negative results, adding 146 new cases in the past week with now 2,913 total positive cases and 40 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

Josephine County has seen significant increases in recent weeks has reported 98 breakthrough cases after testing 101,777 individuals with 96,226 negative results, 5,551 total positive test results adding 464 new cases in the past week with now 4,506 total cases of COVID-19 and now 76 deaths.

Jackson County, which includes the Medford area, with a total population of 221,290, reports 281 breakthrough cases after testing 285,672 individuals, 64,382 more people than the counties total population, with 265,146 negative test results, 20,256 positive results, and 13,348 total cases of COVID-19 with now 164 deaths as of Friday, August 6th.
