Back in the Win Column Monday Night, Lady Bruins Move on to St. Mary’s Tonight

Coach Schofield and the Lady Bruins at North Valley Monday Night.

Coming off a tough loss last Tuesday against a very strong Sutherlin Lady Bulldog team, the Lady Bruins traveled to Grants Pass Monday evening to take on the North Valley Lady Knights.

Sitting for almost a week on a loss they believe they could of won, Coach Schofield had the Lady Bruins determined to execute a game plan. The Lady Bruins used their defense to work themselves into the game holding the Lady Knights to just 8 points from 3 shooters in the first period. Shelby Jirsa #5 led the way early for the Lady Bruins, hitting a three pointer, and a basket for 5 of the Lady Bruins 12 points in the period.

In the 2nd period, leading 12-8, the Lady Bruin two three pressure and trap defense shut down the Lady Knights offense for the second straight period allowing only 6 Lady Knight points.

The Lady Bruin offense took full advantage of the turn-overs created by the pressure defense, running the fast break and hitting the open jumpers from behind the 3 point line. Sierra Fitzhugh #00, Shelby Jirsa #5, and Rockette Marrington #14 all hit from behind the arc in the period as again, Shelby Jirsa #5 led the way with 7 points in the period and 12 points in the first half.

With a 31-14 lead to start the 3rd, the Lady Knights stiffened their defense, threw over the Lady Bruin press with some success, and put together 12 points of offense while holding the Lady Bruins to just 11 points. Sierra Fitzhugh #00 led the way in the 3rd for the Lady Bruins hitting a three pointer on her way to 7 points in the period.

Holding a comfortable 15 point lead going into the final period leading 41-26, the Lady Bruins shut down Lady Knight scoring opportunities and the Lady Bruins’ Sierra Fitzhugh led all scorers in the final period with 6 points. Fitzhugh also led all scorers in the game scoring 20 of the Lady Bruins 54 points in the game.

The Lady Bruins took the 54-30 win and coach Schofield told the Compass “I thought we had a slow start… took us a full quarter to kind of find our footing. We weren’t as good on the boards tonight as we have been and we will continue to work on our execution.”

The Lady Bruins will be in Medford tonight (Tuesday) to take on the St. Mary’s Lady Crusaders at 5:30pm.
