A Great Game for a Great Cause

On Wednesday night in a quiet soggy northwestern town just north of the California/ Oregon border, a group of young ladies gathered for a charity event benefiting Katelyn’s Cause, and a football game broke out.

At the midway point of the Bruins Homecoming week, the annual Powder Puff football game was played in front of dedicated fans. From the very beginning, the Senior/Freshmen team took control, jumping all over the Junior/Sophomore girls with raw speed. Senior Stephanie Birks took hand-off early in the first quarter and ran away from a stunned Junior/Sophomore team for a long sweeping run into the end zone.

As the thick soaking mist rained down, the Junior/Sophomore team struggled to put together a drive, and with a slick football, turnovers were the equalizer. About midway through the first half, the Seniors would again score on another sweep play by Birks who outran the defense to the corner and raced into the end zone, giving the Senior/Freshman team a commanding 14-0 lead at the half-time break.

The Junior/Sophomore team came out in the second half with a new game plan of their own, sweeps to the outside, speed and defense. Early in the 2nd half sophomore Avana Pettus, just like her senior counterpart Stephanie Birks, would take the handoff and run away from the Senior/Freshman defense and bolt into the end zone.

After a back and forth battle at midfield for most of the rest of the 2nd half, junior Anna Serna would pick off a Senior/Freshman pass and return it all the way down to the 20-yard line. With less than 30 seconds left in the game and trailing by a touchdown, sophomore Pettus would get the call again and outrun the Senior/Freshman defense into the corner of the end zone to tie the game.

After a Junior/Sophomore kick off, the Senior/Freshman team would have one last play to take the game, and after a handoff dive up the middle, Senior Abby Farmer would race away from the rest of the field only to be caught within yards of the game-winning end zone ending the game a 21-21 tie.

A great game for a great local cause. Congratulations to all those who put this event together, and thank you to all who donated to Katelyn’s Cause.
