The Lady Bruin softball team and head coach Tony Baron hosted the Douglas Lady Trojans Saturday after defeating the Lady Trojans earlier in the week in Winston 25-4.
After a delay to the game start due to an umpire issue, coach Baron sent junior Madison Taylor #22 to the circle to challenge the Lady Trojans with different pitching motion and the Lady Trojans got their first batter on base on an infield error. The Lady Trojans would score that base runner and take a 0-1 lead going into the bottom of the first.
The Lady Bruins bats were quiet early, with a strike-out and a ground-out before junior Jordan Crosby #11 drove a hard ground ball to left field to start a Lady Bruin two out rally. Pitcher Madison Taylor helped herself driving the ball to the fence and scoring Crosby to tie the game at 1-1 after one.
The Lady Bruins continued to be aggressive on the base-paths, forcing the Lady Trojans into errors, adding only 2 runs in the second and third innings until midway into the bottom of the 4th inning, when junior out-fielder Hannah James #5 stepped into the batters box watched two strikes cross the plate and then sent the 1 ball and 2 strike Lady Trojan pitch over the centerfield wall for a 2 run homer that would set the stage for two more home-runs in the inning by Jordan Crosby and Madison Taylor to secure a 13-3 win for the Lady Bruins.
In the late game, coach Baron sent senior Gracie Harms #27 to the circle who had handed the Lady Trojans a crushing 25-4 loss at home on Wednesday. But Harms would need a little more help from the Lady Bruin bats in this outing, as a lethargic Lady Bruin defense committed 7 errors in the game.
The Lady Trojans would score first after two early Lady Bruin defensive errors put runners in scoring position and get one run across the plate taking a 0-1 lead into the bottom of the first.
The Lady Bruin offense went to work, and jumped out early when junior out-fielder Hannah James led off with a line drive triple to the right-center wall, followed by left handed hitter junior Jordan Pryor #16’s line drive to the opposite field scoring James to tie the game.
In the bottom of the second, sophomore third baseman Rockette Marrington #21 smashed a 1 ball and 1 strike pitch over the center-field wall for a solo home-run before the beginning of the line-up, James, Pryor, and Crosby put together a string of hits that first scored senior Tilly Peters #8 and added 4 more runs in the bottom of the second sending the Bruins on to a 9-4 win to take the 3 game series 3-0.
A special acknowledgement to the umpire of the double-header who umpired BOTH games alone after being called from another venue. The school district is experiencing a shortage of umpires, if you would like to become an umpire please contact the school district to find out how today.
Head Coach Tony Baron and his 3-0 Lady Bruin softball team will travel to Medford Tuesday to take on the 3-0 Cascade Christian Crusaders.
