Sunny days, the smell of fresh cut grass and the sounds of softball ringing in the air ushers in both spring and the 2021 BHHS varsity girls softball season after an almost two year hiatus.
Head coach Tony Baron and his 2021 softball team traveled to Winston to start their season against the Douglas Lady Trojans. Coach Baron brings an experienced team to the diamond with four seniors and all four seniors played big roles in Wednesdays win.
Hannah James stepped into the box to start the game and took a 1-1 pitch deep to straight away center field for a stand-up triple. As Jordan Pryor was working her way on base with a walk, James was crossing the plate for the first run of the BHHS Lady Bruin season on a wild pitch, and the Lady Bruins never looked back.
Senior Gracie Harms took the mound for the Lady Bruins allowing only 4 runs in five innings while striking out 12. On offense, the Lady Bruins were aggressive on the bases forcing throwing errors on the Lady Trojans that allowed big innings for the Lady Bruins. The aggressive base running combined with 12 team hits and a homerun by senior Lexi Schofield proved to be too much for the Lady Trojans who allowed 25 Lady Bruin runs in 5 innings to start the season.
“It was a great start to a shortened season.” coach Baron told the Compass. “From day one of this season we have asked this team to come out sprinting as if we haven’t missed a beat since our loss to Clatskanie in the first round of the 2019 playoffs., especially since this group was unable to have a season in 2020.”
The Lady Bruins match up again with the Lady Trojans at home this Saturday in an afternoon double header.
