After a contentious Brookings City Council meeting, Monday, April 12th, Brookings Mayor Jake Pieper resigned Tuesday morning, April 13th, effective immediately.
Fellow council members brought an agenda item regarding a letter of support, with a disclaimer, that was personally written by Mayor Jake Pieper regarding Project Turnkey.
The Council members then voted 3-2 to have an official letter drafted, addressed to the Oregon Community Foundation, and signed by the mayor stating “Based on the information known to us at this time, we do not support Project Turnkey”.
In a statement made by Mayor Pieper on his social media page Tuesday evening, “I have lost the trust of City Council…” Mayor Pieper said, and continued on to say that he had submitted his resignation Tuesday morning, April 13th, 2021, effective immediately.
‘Project Turnkey’ is a program the Oregon Legislature has allocated a total of $65 million to for the purpose of acquiring motels/hotels for use as non-congregate shelter for people experiencing homelessness or at-risk of homelessness.
