Coach Lorinda Shew and her Brookings-Harbor varsity girls volleyball team took to the court Tuesday evening and officially started an unusual and certainly unconventional, 2021 high school prep sports season.
The Lady Bruins started their path taking on one of the top ranked teams in the 3A-5 Far West League, the Cascade Christian Lady Challengers. The Challengers brought a formidable experienced team to Brookings with 7 returning seniors and consistent height to the front line.
The Lady Bruins brought three of their own seniors to the floor also, and led by senior #4 Shelby Jirsa’s 5 kills and 5 assists kept the strong Challenger team with in reach.
“We struggled to keep up with the speed of Cascade Christian’s offense.” Coach Shew told the Compass. Cascade Christian was big at the net both offensively and defensively, but junior middle blocker #3 Skylar Gallagher was nothing less than fearless at the net.
Senior leadership from #11 Gracie Harms and #5 Sierra Fitzhugh who each had 5 and 3 kills respectively, inspired the Lady Bruins to a thrilling late comeback in the second set, only to fall short in the final point of the match.
“The Challengers are always solid opponents. and we look forward to matching up with them again.” Coach Shew said.
