Crescent City Police Officers were dispatched Friday to the area of the Safeway Parking lot Friday, January 8th, after a National Parks Officer spotted a confirmed stolen vehicle traveling northbound on Hwy. 101.
Upon arrival Crescent City Police Units took the lead on the investigation and the suspect was detained as he was walking away from the front door of Safeway. At this time, Crescent City Police Units were assisted by several units from the California Highway Patrol who had also arrived and assisted with the scene.
During the investigation two handguns were recovered from inside the stolen vehicle. 37 year old Desmond Thornton was arrested and booked into the Del Norte County Jail for possession of stolen property, possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, and prohibited person in possession of a firearm.
The case is still under investigation and will be forwarded to the Del Norte County District Attorney for prosecution.
