Brooking Post Office Re-Opens Today after Emergency Closure

The Brookings U.S. Post Office on Spruce St. in downtown Brookings was abruptly closed and evacuated at approximately 2:30pm Tuesday afternoon after what was described by U.S. Postal Officials as an emergency suspension of the office effective immediately, due to an environmental issue that was being investigated and mitigated if necessary.

During the emergency suspension, while mail in P.O. Boxes prior to the incident remained at the Brookings location, future Post Office operations were to be conducted at the Gold Beach Post Office location.

According to U.S. Post Office Officials, a package containing a hazardous material had leaked a trace amount in the facility, prompting the closing as containment and clean-up procedures were implemented.

Late Wednesday afternoon, U.S. Post Office Officials announced that the environmental issue had been sufficiently resolved and that the Brookings location U.S. Post Office would resume regular business beginning Wednesday, November 3rd.
