New Single Day Record as COVID-19 Numbers Increase

The state of Oregon had one week with a decrease in the total number of COVID-19 Cases as of last Saturday, only to follow that with an increase of 2,363 new cases between October 3rd, and October 9th. That equals 514 more new cases than the previous week between September 26th and Friday October 2nd as well as a new high single day, recording 484 new cases on Thursday October 8th.

On Friday, October 9th, Governor Kate Brown announced the county of Umatilla has been re-added to the ‘County Watch List’ and holds the honor of being the first county to be re-added. This brings the total number of counties on Governor Brown’s ‘County Watch List’ to four, including Malhuer County, Benton and Clatsop Counties and now Umatilla County.

Governor Kate Brown also announced on Tuesday, October 6th, a plan to deploy a huge influx of rapid COVID-19 tests from the federal government. Oregon will be receiving 60,000 to 80,000 COVID-19 rapid tests per week until the end of the year. The Abbott BinaxNOW antigen tests can diagnose cases of COVID-19 in 15 minutes.

“With this increased testing capacity, we hope to be able to diagnose more people quickly so they can get the care they need. We want to identify more cases of COVID-19 so we can also isolate and quarantine people.” said Governor Brown.

The 6 northern Oregon counties of Clackamus, Marion, Multonomah, Umatilla, Washington an Linn now comprise 67% of the states total COVID-19 cases and 91% of the states 34 deaths in the past week.

These six counties comprise 24,617 of the states 36,526 total cases as well as 72% of the states death toll with 432 of the states 597 deaths, up 34 since last Friday, October 2nd.

Curry County’s latest report Friday, October 9th, now reports testing 2,035 individuals with 1,997 negative tests, and now has 9 active confirmed cases of COVID-19 while the county has 29 recovered cases and 0 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

Del Norte County Department of Health and Human Services reported testing 8,909 with 8,740 negative results, 169 total confirmed cases, 23 active cases reported to Public Health, with 0 current hospitalizations and 1 death.

Humboldt County to the south of Del Norte County reports 529 total cases, adding 11 new CoVID-19 cases in the past week after testing 31,038 individuals with now 16 active cases, 505 recoveries, 32 hospitalizations, no new deaths in the past week totaling now 8 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic as of Friday, October 9th.

Coos County to the north, reported testing 7,792 individuals with 7,649 negative tests, adding 29 new cases of COVID-19 in the past week with now 196 total positive cases and 0 deaths since the beginning of the pandemic.

Josephine County reports testing 13,122 individuals with 12,915 negative results, adding 24 new cases in the past week, 236 total positive cases of COVID-19 and 2 deaths.

Jackson County continues to see significant increases after reporting another 78 cases of COVID-19 this past week after testing 37,776 individuals with 36,536 negative test results, 1,335 total cases of COVID-19, and no new deaths in the past week totaling 6 deaths as of Friday, October 9th.
