On Saturday, September 16th, the 2nd annual Guns & Hoses single day softball tournament was hosted by the Del Norte County Sheriff’s Office and took place in Crescent City’s Pyke Field with all proceeds benefiting local Explorer Programs (including the Naval Sea Cadets) and Search & Rescue.
Chris Corpstein began the competition with an excellent rendition of our National Anthem.
Four teams, each required to field teams consisting of 75% public safety personnel, were represented by the California Highway Patrol, Crescent City Fire and Rescue, Del Norte Sheriffs Office, and the Pelican Bay Star Prison.
After a day of fierce competition, a Home-Run Derby would be held prior to the Championship game between the Pelican Bay State Prison team, and the Crescent City Fire and Rescue team.
The Home-Run Derby was reportedly turned into a launching pad for Jason Taylor from the Pelican Bay State Prison team as he ran away with the title.
After battling through the competition, Pelican Bay State Prison would face off and ultimately win the championship game and take home the coveted 2017 Guns & Hoses Banner against a tough Crescent City Fire & Rescue team.
CHP-Crescent City would take third place and the Del Norte Sheriff’s Office would end up forth over-all.
Sheriff Apperson and Nate Trimm prepared over forty pounds of slow smoked tri-tip for sandwiches and also provided commentary for the games.
A special thanks goes out to the “banner sponsors” which included Western Valley Insurance, Del Norte Child Care Council, The Law Office of Robert F. Cochrane, The Club, The Apperson Family, HASP, The Elk Valley Casino, Custom Dezign Graphics, CAPC and Greenscapes Landscaping.
Additional thanks were earned again by Custom Dezign Graphics for helping out with Team DNSO’s jerseys and for making the banners needed for the game.
Volunteers at the fundraiser included DNSO Explorers, DNSO Search & Rescue and the Redwood National Park Engine 352 crew, led by Jon Maxwell.
As always, the Parks & Recreation crew and Kelsey Bozeman were outstanding helping to prep the field and keep the facilities in order.
