The Forest Service announced Saturday, September 23rd, that they will be hosting a series of four public meetings in four separate communities affected by the Chetco Bar Fire. The series of meetings in Brookings, Agness, Gold Beach and Cave Junction will offer a current update on the current conditions of the fire as well as a history of the efforts put forth to control the massive blaze from its inception in July.
Forest Supervisor Rob MacWhorter emphasizes the “This is an opportunity for the public to hear the Forest Service describe the full suppression actions that were taken in the Kalmiopsis Wilderness on the Chetco Bar Fire. We’ll review the pattern of historic fires specific to this area and some of the challenges we face when fighting fires in the wilderness.”
The Chetco Bar Fire history presentation will include highlights from the initial attack suppression efforts made in the first 24-48 hours, including key decisions made regarding firefighter safety, as well as the utilization of aviation resources.
The Pacific Northwest Incident Management Team 2 Incident Commander and other local Forest Service officials will address the full suppression strategies and tactics taken over an approximately two-week period as well as strategies recommended by a National Incident Management Organization Team.
After the Burned Area Emergency Response team speaks to restoration plans, the public will have the opportunity to ask questions.
