On Friday evening, July 17th, just before sunset U.S. Coast Guard Sector North Bend helicopter crew conducted a successful rescue of two hikers who found themselves lost and in distress.
With concerns about overnight temperatures and the pair’s lack of water, police traced the hiker’s 911 cell phone call for help to determine the pair’s location.
With night time rapidly approaching the U.S. Coast Guard helicopter crew then used those coordinates to locate and execute an inland hoist rescue of both hikers alongside a 4500ft mountain in a remote area approximately 20 miles east of Brookings.
They were then taken to the Coast Guard base, where officials from the Curry County Sheriff’s office met and took them back to their vehicle.
