A man out peddle kayak fishing early Monday morning May 25th in Shelter Cove California, just over 60 miles south of Eureka California, was reportedly attacked by a 16′ to 18′ Great White shark.
According to reports, from the Shelter Cove Fire Department, the man had apparently kayaked himself out to the buoy before 7:00am, and began fishing.
The man had landed some Ling Cod and had them in the kayak, however blood from the catch was evidently leaking from the kayak and within moments of landing the Ling, the large shark struck the mid-section of the kayak.
During the attack, the Kayaker hit the shark on the nose after which the shark released the kayak and retreated.
The Kayaker had managed to keep the kayak upright and he immediately began to return to shore, however, the shark had damaged the kayak significantly and had disabled the peddle mechanism. The Kayaker then began to paddle only to notice that the kayak was taking on water and beginning to sink. He phoned 911 for help and was struck by a wave that sent the phone into the ocean.
After being located by officials in the water clinging to the sinking kayak, a call was put out by marina workers to all vessels in the area and the Kayaker was pulled from the water by local fisherman and returned to shore with the damaged kayak.
