Brookings-Harbor Varsity Football played their final preseason game and their first home game of the season Friday night in front a large crowd with a 7:00 PM Kick-off. The cool crisp night of football would be started with a Jason Vanginderen kick-off to the visiting Riverhawks from the Dalles.
On the Riverhawks first offensive possession, they would control the ball for a good portion of the first quarter on this drive with a mix of short passing plays and a variety of sweeps to the corners. This drive would culminate with an eighteen-yard pass play to the corner of the end zone giving the Riverhawks an 8-0 lead after a two-point conversion.
The Dalles would then kick to the Bruins for their first offensive possession of the night. The Bruins would start their offensive night sluggishly, running some power dives up the middle for few yards before turning the ball over to the Riverhawks.
The game would then turn into a defensive battle, with #66 Justin Vanginderen recovering a Riverhawk fumble with 9:45 left in the 2nd period.
The Bruin offense would then put together a string of offensive plays only to be held again by a tough Dalles defense.
The Bruin defense played the Riverhawks tough forcing another turnover with 7:25 left in the 2nd quarter again recovered by #66 Justin Vanginderen.
The Bruins would put together another round of good offense only to suffer a fumble by #21, Manny Zamora. Unfortunately, the turnover would turn into points for the Riverhawks when Dalles Seufalemua would run for a 20-yard touchdown with 1:26 left in the first half, followed by another two-point conversion making the score 16-0 at end of the first half.
The second half would begin with the Bruins receiving the kick-off to #16 Marcus Clay, followed by Brig Schofield being sacked deep in Bruin territory.
The Riverhawks would then turn to a power run game, that would dominate the timeclock and ball possession throughout the second half.
With 5:13 left in the 3rd period #3 Dalles Seufalemu would rush for another bruising touchdown. The attempted conversion would be no good leaving the score at 22-0 Riverhawks.
The Bruin defense would continue to play tough with #66 Justin Vanginderen sacking the quarterback and #1 Bailey Stamm making a late interception.
This young Bruins squad will take this learning experience into their first league game next week when they take on a confident Bulldog team in North Bend, boasting a 3-0 record in the preseason.
