Brookings Harbor senior wrestler Averi Winn returned to the State Tournament after winning his 2nd District Title in as many years. After a successful season, Winn started the Tournament with a #2 seed and hopes of returning to the podium.
At the State Tournament, after wearing his opponent down Winn won his first match by pin in the 3rd round.
In his next match he was matched up against a Dayton wrestler. This match went a full 3 rounds to a 3-3 stalemate that resulted in the next point winning. Winn dropped the match in extra time. and with it, a chance at the top spot.
His next match up was against a Pleasant Hill wrestler that Winn had previously defeated in the District Tournament. Again Winn wore him opponent down for the pin in the 2nd round.
On Saturday a win would insure Winn a podium spot and a match for 3rd. Winn would be matched up against a Taft wrestler. Once again the match would go late into the 3rd round before Winn would get 2 points for a takedown after transitioning from a 1 point escape for the win.
The win put him in a matchup vs Nyssa where Winn’s last extra time matches would take their toll. Winn fell behind early but fought for points escaping. However his opponent ultimately wore him out and he lost by points.
Congratulations to our own Averi Winn who placed fourth in state this past weekend in Portland. He moved up 2 spots this year from his 6th place finish last season.
