The Bruin boys basketball team played their first game at home after spending the weekend at the Yreka Tournament. The North Bend Bulldogs, coming off of a win over Cottage Grove, traveled to Brookings Tuesday night and ran into a Bruin team firing on all cylinders.
The Bruins wasted no time jumping out on the Bulldogs, putting five Bruins in the scoring column in the first period and dropping 16 points. Senior guard Evan Fronckowiak led the Bruins offense with 5 points in the first period.
In the second period, the Bruins picked up where they left off and again spread the ball around putting seven players in the scorebook. Center Derek Tuttle #20 took control of the paint, putting up 4 points and Andrew Burger #2 hit a bucket and an outside 3 pointer.
At the start of the second half, North Bend made some adjustments and tried to isolate the Bruins on defense with fast breaks and drives to the basket. The Bruins struggled to find the hoop in the third period getting only 11 points in the quarter.
The Bulldogs continued to battle and got a double-digit deficit to under 10 points mid-way through the third period and finished the period with 17 points cutting the Bruin lead to 6 points.
In the fourth period, both teams continued their second-half gameplan, driving to the basket, getting to the free-throw line and trading baskets. Junior forward Logan Holler #33 took control of the 4th period and fed the Bulldogs a steady diet of their own game…isolating a defender, driving inside and getting to the free-throw line.
The Bulldogs put together 14 points in the 4th quarter. But the Bruins, behind 11 points from #33 Logan Holler, dropped 15 points in the period taking the 61-53 lead.
Talking with Coach Beaman after the game he said “the kids are beginning to trust each other. Tonight we made the extra pass and moved the ball around better which is encouraging.” “We appreciate the support from our home crowd and look forward to playing at home against Del Norte Tuesday night after we travel to Bandon this Friday.”
