The new look Bruin varsity boys basketball team took to the hardwood Wednesday night for their first non-league contest against a skilled and big Marshfield team.
Marshfield controlled the tip and immediately ran on the Bruins, running up a 4-12 lead early. The Bruins turned up the defense and scrapped their way back into the game putting up 8 points of their own to tie the game 12-12 with 3:00 minutes left in the first period.
As the game advance into the 2nd period of play, both teams tried to pull away from each other, but both teams matched each others play and stayed within a few points of each other as they traded baskets. Going into the halftime break, the Bruins trailed the Pirates 27-28.
The 3rd period started off much the same as first half, with the Bruins struggling through some tough shooting and the Pirates extended their lead to 6 points leading 29-35. Again the Bruins stepped up and went on a 9 point run, but the Pirates kept pace and continued to lead at the end of the 3rd period 38-43.
In the 4th period the Pirates kept up the pressure extending their lead to 43-50 with 7:00 minutes left in the 4th. Again the Bruins roared back, going on a 10 point run bringing themselves within a point 53-54 with just over 3:00 minutes in the game.
Both teams exchanged points and the lead as time ticked away with the Bruins tying the game 58-58 at the 2:00 minute mark after Logan Holler #33 hit a corner 3 pointer. Leading 59-58 with 1:30 left both teams exchanged shots but the Pirates made it to the freethrow line and regulation ended in a 62-62 tie sending the first game of the season into OT.
The overtime period was much of the same as the two evenly matched teams fought to start their 2019 season with a win. But as time wore on, the Bruins ran into foul trouble with Jake Beamam being the first of two Bruins to foul out of the game in the overtime period. As time ticked away, the Pirates made their freethrows taking the 69-76 win as the final buzzer sounded.
